Surfer SEO vs Semrush in 2026: content editor, keyword research, backlinks, rank tracking, AI visibility tracking and prices, checked on each vendor's site.

If your team writes and updates a lot of content and wants a score for every page, pick Surfer. If you need SEO research and link data in one login, pick Semrush. Many teams run both: Semrush for research, Surfer for writing.

What Surfer does today
Surfer is a content optimization platform. It moved from surferseo.com to surfer.ai, where it now leads with AI visibility. You write in its Content Editor, and Surfer scores the draft on the terms and headings that top pages use.
Its plans also include an AI writing assistant called Surfy, an AI detector and humanizer, a plagiarism check and one click internal linking. The AI Tracker shows how often ChatGPT and other AIs mention your brand. More than 150,000 marketers and SEOs use Surfer, agencies among them.
Surfer’s history
Surfer began in Poland in 2017. Lucjan Suski built the first version as a tool for KS, a marketing agency run by Sławek Czajkowski. His brother Michał worked there as an SEO specialist. The agency took up the prototype within weeks, and the team turned it into a product.
In 2018 Surfer launched data backed content optimization and its first Content Score. That score became the heart of the product. In 2022 it added AI writing with Surfer AI. By 2026 it had moved to the surfer.ai domain and rebuilt its pitch around AI search visibility, with prompt tracking on most plans.
In October 2025, Positive Group bought Surfer. Positive, a French software group with about 400 staff, did not disclose the price. Surfer had about 12,000 customers at the time. Lucjan Suski stayed on as CEO, and Surfer now runs as Positive’s AI search unit.

What Semrush does today
Semrush is a large SEO and marketing suite. Its SEO plan covers keyword research, competitor analysis, Position Tracking and Site Audit. Semrush sells AI tracking as the AI Visibility Toolkit, or bundled with SEO as Semrush One.
Semrush also sells toolkits for content, local, traffic and market data, social, ads and PR. Each one is priced on its own. More than 28 million people use Semrush.
Semrush’s history
Oleg Shchegolev and Dmitri Melnikov founded Semrush in 2008. It grew from a keyword tool into a full marketing suite. In March 2021 it went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SEMR.
Semrush then bought its way into new areas. It added Backlinko in 2022. In 2024 it bought Brand24 and Exploding Topics. That same year it bought Third Door Media, the publisher of Search Engine Land.
AI search came next. Semrush launched its AI Toolkit in March 2025. In October 2025 it launched Semrush One, which bundles SEO and AI visibility in one plan. In November 2025, Adobe agreed to buy Semrush for about $1.9 billion. The deal closed on April 28, 2026, and Semrush now sits inside Adobe’s customer experience business.
Surfer SEO vs Semrush content tools
Surfer wins for writers. Content is the whole product, so every plan opens with the Content Editor and a document limit.
| Feature | Surfer | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Live content score | Content Editor and Content Score on every plan | Content optimization on Semrush One Pro+ |
| AI writing | Surfy, plus an AI detector and humanizer | AI writing in your brand voice (Content Toolkit) |
| Brand facts and voice | Brand Knowledge and Custom Voices | Brand voice in the Content Toolkit |
| Briefs and topics | Topical Map | Topic Finder and an SEO Brief Generator |
| Integrations | WordPress and Google Docs (Standard), Contentful (Pro), Zapier (Peace of Mind) | Part of the wider Semrush suite |
| Where it lives | Every plan | Semrush One Pro+ or the Content Toolkit at $60/mo billed yearly |
Surfer grades your draft live against the pages that rank, so writers get a number to aim for. Surfy drafts and rewrites inside the editor. The humanizer and AI detector check the tone. On the Semrush side, the Content Toolkit adds 5 SEO content boosts a month.
Pick Surfer if your writers live in a content editor every day. Semrush’s content tools are fine for briefs and quick checks, but they are one part of a bigger suite. For a wider list of writing tools, see our guide to the best AI SEO tools.
Surfer SEO vs Semrush keyword research
Type any domain into Semrush and you see the keywords it ranks for. Then you can compare it with rivals. That makes Semrush the better pick for market research, and keyword research sits on its SEO plan next to competitor analysis.
| Feature | Surfer | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword tool | Keyword Research | Core tool on the SEO plan |
| Topic clusters | Topical Map | Topic Finder (Content Toolkit) |
| What top pages cover | SERP Analyzer | Competitor analysis on the SEO plan |
| Any domain’s keywords | Lighter, built for content planning | Look up the keywords any domain ranks for |
| Competitor compare | No | Compare a domain with rivals |
Surfer’s Keyword Research and Topical Map help you plan clusters of articles. Its SERP Analyzer shows what top pages cover. These work well for content planning, and they are lighter for checking a competitor’s whole keyword set. If you want volume, difficulty and intent for a quick check, try the free Arrowsterr keyword research tool.
Surfer SEO vs Semrush backlink data and site audit
Surfer has no backlink tools at all, so this round goes to Semrush.
| Feature | Surfer | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Backlink analysis | No | Yes, in the SEO suite |
| Technical site audit | No site crawler | Site Audit on the SEO plan |
| AI crawler checks | No | AI Search Site Audit flags issues that block AI bots |
| Content checks | Content Audit, Cannibalization Report (Pro) | Keyword cannibalization analysis (Pro+) |
Surfer’s Content Audit looks at how your existing pages perform and which ones to refresh. A technical crawl is a separate job. That’s the one that finds broken links and blocked pages.
AI bots need to reach your pages before AI answers can cite them. You can test any page with the free AI crawler checker.
Surfer SEO vs Semrush rank tracking
The two track different things. Surfer watches pages. Semrush watches keywords.
| Feature | Surfer | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| What it tracks | Pages | Keywords |
| Entry plan | Discovery: 10 pages | SEO and Semrush One Starter: 500 keywords daily on 5 websites |
| Middle plans | Standard: 50 pages, Pro: 200 pages | Pro+: 1,500 keywords on 15 websites |
| Top plan | Peace of Mind: 500 pages | Advanced: 5,000+ keywords |
| Extras | Ranking Drop Alerts | Tracking by location and device (Pro+) |
Surfer’s Ranking Drop Alerts tell you when a tracked page loses ground. That fits a content team that wants to know which article needs a refresh.
For classic rank tracking, Semrush is the stronger pick. It fits an SEO team that reports keyword positions to clients each week, and daily tracking by keyword, location and device is built for that report.
Surfer SEO vs Semrush AI visibility tracking
Surfer Pro and Semrush One Starter both run 50 prompts a day. The gaps show up in which AIs each one covers and in the data around the prompts.
| Feature | Surfer | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Entry plan with AI tracking | Standard: 25 prompts, weekly, ChatGPT only | AI Visibility Toolkit: 25 prompts, daily |
| Mid plan | Pro: 50 prompts daily | Semrush One Starter: 50 prompts daily |
| Higher plan | Peace of Mind: 100 prompts daily | Semrush One Pro+: 100 prompts daily |
| AI only plan | AI Search Analytics: 50 prompts daily, 5 brand spaces | AI Visibility Toolkit |
| AIs covered | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini | ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Other AI reports | Mention Gap, Brand Sentiment | Brand Performance, Competitor Research, Prompt Research |
Semrush’s Prompt Tracking covers ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, so check which AIs each report uses before you buy. Semrush also lets you run AI visibility reports for any domain, which helps with competitor research. If you want more AIs at a lower price, see our Semrush AI Toolkit alternative guide.
Surfer ties tracking to writing. You see a mention gap, then fix the page in the same tool. Semrush puts more data around the prompts. Prompt Research, for one, shows volume and difficulty for AI topics. To compare more trackers side by side, read our list of the best AI visibility tools.
